2013 Lamb and Wool Queen Updates

When they say “Don’t blink,” they really mean it!  It is hard to believe how quicklythis year’s Pa State Farm Show came and went.  For me, even though it flew by, I can’t think of a better way I would have liked to spend my first week as the 2013 PA Lamb and Wool Queen.  As Sarah Grube finished out her reign during the opening ceremonies, I followed by doing a demonstration on the Penn State Ag stage presenting lamb and wool facts and explaining the sheep to shawl contests.  I also spent a good number of hours at the booth spinning, answering the many questions asked, meeting the other state commodity representatives, and even had a craft for any of the kids to make their own pompom sheep!  My brother told me later that he saw several parents walking around the Farm Show holding their kids little sheep while the glue was still drying!  On Wednesday of that week, I spent the entire morning at the youth Fleece to Shawl contest cheering on the kids and conversing with intrigued spectators, including Secretary George Greig and his wife.  Later in the day, I had the opportunity to participate in the Sheep to Shawl contest weaving for the team Just a Little Twisted.  As the end of the week approached, I attended the open and junior sheep shows and have to give a big thank you to all my little helpers who assisted me with handing out all of those ribbons!  I also exhibited two of my Leicester Longwool sheep on Friday, one of which went on to win Reserve Champion AOB Wool.  Outside of my reign as the lamb and wool queen, I also participated in a miniature horse extravaganza with my miniature horse named Bumble and won Best in Show at the rabbit show with my white English Angora named “Be My Wish.”  This past Farm Show week was a very memorable one for me, but, more importantly, I look forward to what the rest of the year has in store!  Since Farm Show came and went, I then started prepping for this year’s lambing season.  I always get excited when those first little hooves of the year hit the ground and those beaming eyes stare back at me.  I decided it was only appropriate to name my first set of ram lambs this year Chip and Dale and was very thankful they decided to arrive over my spring break week!  Coming up, I am planning on attending Fox Chase Farms open farm day and the Keystone Classic show in June.  More importantly, I look forward to what the rest of the year has in store!

Happy lambing,

Ashley Shaw
